5 Easy Steps To Dusting Off Your Alt
I previously talked about whether or not I wanted to semi-retire Kibibi, and focus on a new main. There’s been some talk in our guild about ‘dusting-off’ alts that have long since been abandoned, and really start to work on them again. (And, being the trend-setter that I am, it seems many guildies are ‘rezzing’ their long-forgotten characters.) Having done this recently myself, I have five easy tips for those thinking about doing the same.
1 - Devote Some Serious Time
Spending 30 minutes once a week isn’t going to cut it. Even if you’re still going to play your main the most, you need to give some kind of undivided attention to your alt, otherwise, you’re doomed to let him/her collect dust again at some point in the near future.
2 - Get Your UI Situated
If you are like I was when I started dusting off characters, it’s been maybe six months or more since you’ve touched them. I’ve added/deleted/reset my add-ons and mods several times. You’ll want to take 10-15 minutes to get comfortable with a different layout. (And/or, make changes as needed.)
3 - Clean House
Who here will freely admit they started an alt, only to give them up for being a ‘bank toon?’ Well, it’s time to clean house! Go through all of your bags (bank bags), and get rid of anything you don’t want/need.
4 - Get Your Bearings
One of my characters was at level 10, in the Wetlands, with quests in the Night Elf starting areas. Decide where you want to start questing, and get rid of quests/quest items you won’t use. Make sure you run around, grabbing any quest that pops up for you before you head out.
5 - Give A Little ‘Love’
You’ve got a level 70 that’s just over-flowing with cash, right? Share the love! Send 100 gold, bags, potions, enchants, recipes, gear, etc. While I usually don’t ‘twink-out’ my alts, I do generally shower them with things my main often lived without. It’s made leveling them a lot more fun!
Bonus Steps! Read About Your Class, Be Patient
Admit it! You started a warlock because you thought it was so cool to have a demon as a pet and wreck havoc in Kara, right? Well, you quickly realized that a warlock is nothing like you’re used to, and you don’t actually get some of those pets until later on. (Much, later on!) That may have, at least partially, caused you to leave that character forever in your character selection screen, collecting dust.
Take some time to read up on your class. Get to know it better. See what makes it tick, and how to best use what few talent points you have to start with. The new class you’ve chosen may be similar to what you’ve played before, but all classes act very differently, and usually require you to rethink how you do things.
Lastly, be patient! Remember the ‘level 20′ rule, in that most classes don’t really start to shine until levels 20 and above. If you’re level 15, lamenting at the fact that your new class isn’t performing the way you think it should, just give it time, and push until level 20. Trust me, it can make all of the difference in the world!
