Achievements Officially Announced

Posted by: Kibibi   in Game News, Wrath of the Lich King

With all of my energy going into the Raiding! series recently, I admit I haven’t really been focusing on other topics. Of course, the beta for Wrath was released last night for Europe (soon for us too.) Yesterday, I missed a bit of news released by Blizzard that was talked about before; Achievements. In essence, achievements are kind of like recognition in the game for doing any number of different things. (And I do mean any number.) Tasks like giving 20 hugs, defeating every opposing race in PvP, exploring every inch of the worlds that you can, etc. It may sound stupid, but it’s something that’s just got me tickled!

OK, so I’m a bouncer in game, always have been. (I tend to jump a lot, that is.) Eventually some of my guild found a mod called ‘Historian’ that counts, among other things, how many times you’ve jumped. (Silly, yes, but it’s turned into quite the competition with a few folks.) It would be truly great if Blizzard implemented some kind of guild-wide competition thing where we’d actually get a reward for staying on top. (And, they have mentioned announcing things to the guild, so maybe this might be a possibility?)

It’s kind of stupid, but you know what? I bet this could end up being a lot of fun. You’d have really simple/silly challenges like hugging 25 people in a day, to maybe really hard ones like finishing every instance in the game. So, across the board, there will be even more things to do, but they won’t all be so serious. I think this is a great idea, and I can’t wait to see what all we can ‘achieve’ in Wrath!

Achievements are a tad immature imo, which is why I must have them ALL! =(

Kinda reminds me of badges in City of Heroes where you got a badge for visiting the sites of great battles from a particular superhero, or completing certains series of missions in a storyline.

I guess that as long as they don’t take up any more bag space and aren’t as inane as jumping 50,000 times I won’t mind.

City of Heroes!

/Shudder

Moving on, I like the introduction of badges because they give people one more thing to take an interest in. They give completists something else to go nuts with, and they give forum trolls one more thing to whine about and increase the unintentional comedy factor on the official forums.

It’ll be funny though if Blizzard actually implements a jumping calculator and you’ll have to start all over ;)
